The Avebury Downs
I must’ve driven the green lanes of Wiltshire 50 times over the last few years and I simply can’t get enough of them. There’s something so good about the open rolling countryside stretching for as can be seen, coupled with knowing that there is some incredible history on view, going back to the very beginning of civilisation.
This tour was particularly exciting as the long closed Avebury Ridgeway had recently been opened following an action by the Green Lane Association to encourage Wiltshire Council to put an end to their endless temporary closures. This allowed us to explore long lost sections over the chalkland.
It’s great for wildlife and we saw numerous buntings and many skylarks. It’s a bit scratchy in places but generally suitable for most vehicles.
Boiling up a pot noodle on the bonnet whilst looking across glorious views of sweeping downs takes a lot of beating!
This is another 4×4 tour that we never complete, so we sometimes run it in reverse to see what’s the other end.
