WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT

A Typical 4x4 Tour

A typical BYO (Bring Your Own) Lane Tour starts at 9:30am. We give a short introduction and safety briefing and a little advice about the terrain you'll experience. If your tour starts at our training course you will have the chance to drive the circuit. We then collect your signed safety waiver paperwork, issue you with a two-way radio and head off in small groups with a lead instructor.

Using back roads, byways and UCR’s, collectively known as 'green lanes', we will guide you through some of the finest views and countryside and the most exciting lanes. Stopping for tea and lunch breaks, your day with us will normally end around 17:00pm.

Our lead instructors' vehicles are fully equipped with recovery equipment in the unlikely event of any issues. All guides are first aid trained. Tours and routes are 'recced' in advance and we check for any planned closures etc. We also carry equipment to cut back overgrown trees and hedges should we need to, but please be aware that encountering overgrowth is always very likely.

Notes

  • We will be travelling through natural areas on largely unmaintained byways so there is a likelihood vehicles will encounter twigs and bushes. We can take no responsibility for any marks or damage. Vehicles are driven at your own risk and although damage would be unusual we are unable to ensure that there won't be some marking of the paintwork or other lasting impact on the vehicle you drive. It is possible your tyres may receive some side-wall scuffing depending upon how you drive.
  • Your vehicle will get muddy, possibly upon the inside as well as the outside!
  • You may well get muddy too, so please wear appropriate clothing for the day - wet weather gear, warm layers, strung shoes or boots. Clothing suitable for a walk in the countryside would be idea.
  • The routes we drive are all public highways and are subject to the rules of the road and the Highway Code. Vehicles must be taxed, insured, MOT’d and safe to drive and you must have a full driving license. We may ask to see evidence of this and we cannot accept you as a customer unless all paperwork is in order. We will also check your vehicle on the day and may refuse to guide you if issues are discovered.
  • Winter or off-road tyres are ideal however some modern 4x4 systems are remarkably good even on road tyres. Please ask if you have any concerns about the suitability of your vehicle
  • Tours will run in all weathers. Refunds will not be given although in exceptional circumstances we are happy to rebook you on another date.
  • Tours are booked and confirmed via email and payment is via bank transfer upon receipt of our invoice.

How should I prepare for a tour?

  • Most laning vehicles will have a low range gearbox option. Please check that this is working before the tour. Please fix any issues with your vehicle before the trip as travelling off road will always expose any weaknesses. Recovery from the middle of a lane can be difficult and expensive!
  • Check oil , water, lights and tyres – effectively a mini MOT – before any long trips and ideally before any off-road trips.
  • All terrain or Mud terrain tyres are prefered. On some routes and with some modern vehicles road oriented tyres may be acceptable – please discuss this with us prior to the event.
  • You need to have a full size functioning spare wheel – check it’s tyre pressure before joining any trip.
  • Off-road Recovery points in the front and rear are essential. Screw in type , or standard towing eyes are usually acceptable for recovery on an unsurfaced road although most modern Land Rover ones are rated for recovery.
  • Follow the Glass code of conduct and the Countryside code at all times.
  • Carry adequate food and fuel for the day as well as warm and waterproof clothing.
  • Our guides will bring shovels and recovery ropes but having your own is always an excellent ideas and they are not expensive. We are happy to advise.
